Only 4 more days of school.

Big project for the summer: making sure all my sub plans are ready for maternity leave. I'm going to try to have the AP stuff finished by the end of next week, then take care of CP over the summer.

Funny (or sad) story from school from a couple weeks ago:

In 1st bell today we were reviewing the binomial naming system. The following discussion occurred...
Student (freshman): Was Linnaeus Latin?
Me: Um...no, I think he was French (I now remember that he was actually Swedish...my bad). Latin is a language, not a place.
S: Who speaks Latin?
M: The Romans did.
S: What about Latin America?
M: What about it?
S: Don't they speak Latin?
M: No...aren't you in Spanish class?
S: Latinos seriously don't speak Latin?
M: No one speaks Latin as their primary form of communication any more.
Other Student: That's why they call it a "dead language."
S: But then why do they call it Latin America?
M: I don't know...probably because Spanish and Portuguese are derived from Latin, but it it's not because they speak it.

I don't just teach Biology...I give out random history, geography, and language info as well.

It's Thursday of spring break. Did I accomplish any of my goals for the week?Cleaning/organizing progressed, but is not done.

I will get a hair cut tomorrow.

I made some progress on figuring out options for day care. I kind of felt like it was a little early to be worrying about it, since we won't acutally need it until November. Turns out some of these places have year long waiting lists though. I did go see a few places and talk to and e-mail a number of people, so at least I have an idea what's going on now.

Started figuring out what we need to do for the CTCAA. We were going to set up the bank account today, but we still need some paper work done first. We do have a start on recruiting paid members, though. We also have some idea for moving forward. I got the facebook page for the group put together. Not sure if that really amounts to much, but I felt like I accomplished something there.

Not really looking forward to having to start getting up early again next week, but I am ready to start making the final push in AP Bio. The test is the second Monday in May, so we only have a month left. Earlier in the year I told the class a "joke" about commitment:

The difference between being involved and being committed can be illustrated by an eggs and bacon breakfast. The chicken was involved, the pig was committed.

I should find out by the end of next week who the pigs and chickens are.

Spring break fun

Spring break is next week. Goals for the week, in no particular order:

*Get hair cut
*Check out day care options/costs
*Get stuff moving on the CTC alumni association. I was asked to be the interim president to help get everything set before we have elections in August.
*Finnish cleaning/organizing the computer room (including removing the old computer).
*Actually walk outside or on the treadmill most days of the week. I had been walking 20-30 min each day this winter, but the start of track has ended that, since I'm not really home that much.

Sounds like a thrilling week. Spring Break!! Woohoo! I will also devote significant time to sleeping and playing the Wii.

April 30 is the day the ultrasound is scheduled for, so we get to find out what it is. No, I don't want to be "surprised". I realize that there is tradition in finding out if the baby is a boy or a girl when it's born, but no one really wants to be surprised. It's either a boy or a girl...not a surprise. If you flip a coin and it comes up heads, you're not surprised. If it's tails, you're not surprised. If it lands on the edge, then you're surprised. When it comes to children, that's not a surprise you want.

Am I mean?

Fun interaction from class...

The situation: High school freshman Biology class. I have a good rapport with this student and the class as a whole. When the student and their friends first entered the room they were discussing grammatical errors in a note from the student's significant other. During the lesson the following conversation occurred...

student: Where do they come up with these words?
me: It's Latin.
student: Why is it all in Latin?
me: At one time, anyone who was well-educated in Europe or the U.S. learned Latin so that there was a common language for communication.
student: Why don't we learn Latin no more?
me: Apparently we don't even learn English.

Too harsh? :) We all had a good laugh.
Haven't been on here in a while...

Track started a couple weeks ago and we have our first meet on Saturday. It is a relay meet and is intended to be a fun way to start off the season. I'm having trouble deciding who's doing what because of sickness/out of town/soccer games.

Sensei Heeg is recovering from the surgery on his foot, so I'm starting up my lessons with him again on Friday. So far pregnant TKD hasn't been too bad. I tried going to a sparing class during sparing week, which is kind of boring when you can't spar. So now I'm only doing black belt classes during sparing weeks. Tonight, for example we just did boxing drills...only one drill involved kicks and I just went no contact.

We have a new computer. In honour of its arrival, I started to clean and organize the computer room. I got a about half way and now I just have organized piles spread out on the floor. I should probably take care of that this weekend.

Update?

Not an actual full update, just the kind of update where I quickly throw some things up here to acknowledge that I haven't updated for a while. We had a snow day today, with chances of more coming overnight. Woohoo! Rowlf is worn out from his morning of playing in the snow. We had conferences tonight. A conference day is like working two days in one, so getting it off is like getting two days off for the price of one. Good deal.

I have more things to update on, but I'm not going to bother right now. :)

Kitchen

We painted the kitchen this weekend. We tore down the trim (which was just Styrofoam), and haven't gotten new stuff yet, so it still looks a little off. Steve's black belt test is this Saturday, but the weekend after that we'll get the rest of the kitchen finished off...except for the electric work and getting a new microwave to go over the stove.

Steve has to travel this week, so he won't be making it to class, but I think he's ready for the test. His parents are coming down to see it. It will be the first time they've seen him doing tkd, so that should be fun.

Conferences are tomorrow. I have all slots except two filled, so it'll be a long night. Since Steve is out of town, I have to drive home and let the dog out before I go back. Long, long day...
